Oscar or Olivia- Boy or Girl?

Kitten season always brings the same question…

“Is this little one a boy or a girl?” Telling the difference in young kittens can be tricky... especially in the early weeks.

A quick check under the tail can help, but subtle differences matter!

Females:

  • The anus and vulva are very close together (almost touching).

  • The vulva looks like a vertical slit.

  • Often described as looking like an “i” shape.

Most calico & tortoiseshell kittens are female.

Males:

  • There is more space between the anus and penis.

  • The penis opening looks more circular.

  • Often described as looking like a “:” shape.

Testicles may not be visible in very young boys, so don’t panic if you’re unsure.

If you’ve found kittens and aren’t confident identifying their gender, always reach out to your local vet for guidance.
